Clothing and textile business is a major one. Worth nearly 1 trillion British Pounds worldwide it places itself high on the world ranking. An average family spends circa 100 Pounds each month for clothing and certain types of textiles. Textiles used for making apparel are also useful in production of cleaning equipment, parts of vehicles and many other fields. And as any other recyclable material recovering them brings a number of environmental benefits, as well as financial ones.
Some synthetic materials do not decompose, littering our world; others do, but producing methane gas in the process, adding to the global warming. It also reduces the demand for resources that would require manufacturing and the use of energy and chemicals, further adding to the warming effect.
An average British citizen generates 700 kilograms of waste each year. Sources say ca. 15 per cent of that waste consist of various types of textiles. That's 105 kilograms per year, and over one quarter of a kilogram daily. Unwanted apparel that goes into landfill each year in the UK weights 900.000 tons. That's products we throw out on a day to day basis without even thinking about its effect on the very environment we live in, whether or not it might still be useful to someone and basically without any regret. In the modern world the technology and means of transport allow us, to rather thoughtlessly rid our homes of so called 'garbage', take it wherever someone else might be able to still make use of it, sometimes even pay us for that.
Use services like cash for clothes. If you do, at least slightly, care for the well being of the world we and our children are living in, those should prove to be useful.
